The nonprofit Ku‘ikahi Mediation Center is hosting a free talk from noon-1 p.m. April 20 as part of its “Finding Solutions, Growing Peace” Brown Bag Lunch Series.

The talks are the third Thursday of each month in the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney, 655 Kilauea Ave. in Hilo.

This month’s speaker is mediator and teacher Mala‘e Erickson on the topic “Dealing with Anger: Steps to Understanding and Transformation.”

“You can transform anger from blaming others to connecting with what is important to you,” Erickson said. “Although it can be one of the most painful emotions, anger serves an important purpose, and we can use it to serve life.”

During her talk, Erickson will explore the steps to understanding and expressing anger nonviolently, so no one gets hurt.

Erickson has practiced Marshall Rosenberg’s nonviolent communication (compassionate communication) since 2000 and shared it through workshops and practice groups since 2011.

Also a teacher of holistic peer counseling and connection parenting, Erickson is passionate about healing the world through personal growth, child-rearing practices and social change.

Ku‘ikahi’s Brown Bag Lunch Series is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lunch, enjoy an informal and educational talk-story session and meet others interested in “Finding Solutions, Growing Peace.”

The lunch-and-learn series is made possible thanks in part to funding from the Atherton Family Foundation.
